The Illinois Network of Centers for Independent Living (INCIL), a statewide disability advocacy organization, has hired John S. Herring, Sr. as its new executive director. The vacancy resulted from Ryan Croke’s departure to become the chief of staff for the Illinois Department of Human Services. Croke had served the organization since 2017 following founding executive director Ann Ford’s retirement.
“We are excited to work with John, who has served as an administrator for more than 20 years in advocacy work,” said INCIL board president, Mike Egbert. “We’re glad to have him leading the organization.”
Herring most recently served as the executive director of a transitional housing program for homeless veterans in East St. Louis.
“I’m looking forward to moving the independent living philosophy forward by advocating for individuals with disabilities throughout the state of Illinois while educating stakeholders and lawmakers concerning the need related to accessibility to community programs, services, education, employment, housing and public transportation,” said Herring. “My goal is to build upon the foundation that has been laid and make Illinois a ‘best practice’ state for centers of independent living.”
Herring resides in Springfield with his wife, Patricia. They have three children and three grandsons.
