The Springfield Urban League has announced the launch of the Urban Tech & Construction Jobs Program (UTCJP), an initiative designed to introduce underrepresented populations and at-risk individuals to the burgeoning drone industry and the construction sector. This program will empower communities by providing them with valuable skills and opportunities in these rapidly growing fields.
UTCJP is set to provide hands-on training, mentorship, FAA drone registration, limited liability corporation registration and coaching, along with job placement assistance, to 60 individuals age 16 and above. In a move toward promoting safe and environmentally responsible practices, the program will also offer the EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Renovator Course. This essential certification ensures that participants are well-equipped to handle renovation and repair projects in compliance with environmental regulations.
“The UTCJP represents more than just skill-building; it is a critical first step towards generational wealth for many in our community," said Marcus Johnson, president and CEO of the Springfield Urban League. "With the limitless potential of drone technology and the solid opportunities in construction, we’re opening doors to financial freedom. This program is a beacon of hope, charting a course for underrepresented and at-risk individuals to not only secure well-paying jobs but also to build fulfilling, wealth-generating careers.”
By collaborating with industry leaders, local governments and educational institutions, the UTCJP aims to bridge the diversity gap in the drone and construction sectors. This initiative is a step towards fostering equitable economic growth and enhancing social mobility within urban communities.
Dante Watson, owner of Springfield Aeroshots and a certified drone pilot, also shared his insights: “This program is not just about skill acquisition; it’s about
creating a new generation of marketable, prepared and resource-equipped
entrepreneurs and business owners, especially in the dynamic drone industry.”
The program is poised to create numerous employment and entrepreneurial opportunities, equipping participants with the necessary skills, resources and tools to thrive in the technology and construction industries. Registration is available now on the Springfield Urban League website (springfieldul.org). All participants must register by March 8.
The program will be held from March 11 through April 18 (Group A) and April 29 through June 13 (Group B). Each class will be held on Monday and Thursday from 5-7:30 p.m.
