Green Family Stores temporarily moves into former Shop 'n Save on Wabash Avenue

There is activity once again at the former Shop ‘n Save property on the corner of Wabash Avenue and Chatham Road, at least for now.

Green Family Stores is holding an off-site sale for two of its dealerships, Green Certified West and Green Hyundai, that started Jan. 16 and will continue for at least a month, according to marketing director Rachael Buraski.

“We’ll wait and see how it goes, but if we get a lot of snow like last year, people will be wanting to shop indoors,” said Buraski. All of the inventory will be located inside the former grocery store.

The Green Hyundai store at 1200 S. Dirksen Parkway will still remain open during the off-site sale, although Green Certified West, 2541 W. Iles Ave., will temporarily close.

Buraski said there is no specific opening date yet for the new Hyundai dealership currently under construction on Stanford Avenue. The 30,000-square-foot facility will include new technology to support electric vehicles. The current Hyundai facility on South Dirksen Parkway will remain open as a dealership for used vehicles and a service center.

“We’re all excited to hear when they’ll be done, we just don’t know quite yet,” said Buraski.

The Shop ‘n Save stores on Wabash Avenue and North Grand Avenue closed at the end of 2018. Parent company Supervalu closed the remaining 16 Shop ‘n Save stores after selling 19 stores to Schnuck Markets. The third Springfield Shop ‘n Save, on South Dirksen Parkway, was purchased by Quincy-based Niemann Foods earlier in 2018 and converted to a County Market.
