Mas Sabores, a Mexican bakery, taqueria and ice cream shop, will have a soft opening Saturday, July 2, at 425 North Grand Avenue.

Alejandro “Alex” and Gabriela “Gabby” Rico are the owners of the business, which means “more flavors.” The couple currently operate a similar business, Sabores, at 323 N. Main St. in Chatham, but said the new location will allow them to expand their menu offerings.

The Ricos are opening in the building which most recently housed No Way Jose’s. The Mexican restaurant was initially owned and operated by Jose Lopez Jr., who later sold to his managing partner, Oiris Morales.

According to Gabby Rico, Mas Sabores will offer homemade ice cream and popsicles, along with fruit cups, Mexican desserts and snacks. “All the products are made with real fruit and sugar cane, there’s no additives or coloring,” she said.

The Springfield location will also have traditional Mexican food such as tacos, burritos and fajitas, plus a bakery with Mexican-style pastries and bread. “We’re going to make everything on-site,” Gabby Rico said.

The couple had originally hoped to open in time for Cinco de Mayo, but Alex Rico said there were delays on multiple fronts, including with the remodeling and hiring. “We’re still waiting for our liquor license, but we’re going to go ahead and open for now, and hopefully we can have that taken care of within a few weeks,” he said.

A grand opening is planned for Sunday, July 10. Operating hours for the North Grand location will be Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday 12-8 p.m.
