Mas Sabores, a Mexican bakery, taqueria and ice cream shop, to open on North Grand Avenue

Mas Sabores, a Mexican bakery, taqueria and ice cream shop, will soon open on North Grand Avenue.

Alejandro “Alex” and Gabriela “Gabby” Rico are the owners of the business, which means “more flavors.” The couple currently operate a similar business, Sabores, at 323 N. Main St. in Chatham, along with a dog grooming business, Spaw Patrol.

The Ricos are acquiring the building at 425 North Grand Ave., which most recently housed No Way Jose’s. The Mexican restaurant was initially owned and operated by Jose Lopez Jr., who later sold to his managing partner, Oiris Morales.

According to Gabby Rico, Mas Sabores will offer homemade ice cream and popsicles, along with fruit cups, Mexican desserts and snacks. “All the products are made with real fruit and sugar cane, there’s no additives or coloring,” she said.

There will also be traditional Mexican food such as tacos and burritos, plus a bakery with Mexican-style pastries and bread. “We’re going to make everything on-site,” Rico said.

Given the location’s proximity to the two hospitals in Springfield, Rico said she hopes to add coffee products in the future. “We’re going to see how it goes, but we want to be able to add Mexican coffee from Taipan as well.”

Rico said they are waiting on a liquor license and a break in the weather to be able to finish the signage and painting, but “inside, everything is ready to go. We’re crossing our fingers to finally open next month.

“We definitely need to be open before Cinco de Mayo,” she said.
