Kim Dixon, owner of The Wardrobe, has decided to try retirement again. Three years ago, she announced that she had sold her building at South Grand and MacArthur to Michelle Tjelmeland, owner of District 23, and planned to wind down operations in January 2018. The Wardrobe, a women’s clothing and accessories boutique, first opened on MacArthur Boulevard in 1963.
However, several months after the sale of the building, Dixon reopened The Wardrobe at 2820 Plaza Dr. in The Gables.
“I decided that we would continue on for another three years in The Gables,” said Dixon, noting that she had always hoped to find someone to buy the business. “It was a much bigger task to take on The Wardrobe because of the fact that I had sold the building.”
Now that the store has become established in its new location, Dixon said, “Now I’m in a position where I’ve decided to get the word out that The Wardrobe is for sale.”
She said that one of her employees had initially expressed interest, but is now leaving Springfield due to her husband’s career.
“I know it’s a difficult time for people to be thinking about making an investment, but we’ve been around since 1963. There’s no reason that we can’t see The Wardrobe be successful in the future. We’re not closing, we’re going to be around.”
Dixon said, “I’m looking for the next owner to keep the tradition going.”
