After years of speculation about whether Portillo’s would open a location in Springfield, the fast-casual restaurant based in Oak Brook, Illinois, has officially confirmed plans for a restaurant in the capital city. In April, Mayor Jim Langfelder had indicated the company had a “strong interest” in Springfield and was seriously considering the former Walgreens location in Parkway Pointe.

That appears to be the case, as a press release sent out this morning by Portillo’s references plans for a 7,800-square-foot restaurant location at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Lindbergh Blvd. The location will include an outdoor patio and double drive-thru lanes and have a diner theme that pays homage to Historic Route 66.

In a written statement, Langfelder said, “My family and I had our first visit to Portillo’s nearly eight years ago after a Cubs game in Chicago. Ever since then, I could not wait to have the opportunity to enjoy their Italian beef and chocolate cake shake in Mr. Lincoln’s hometown. With their delicious food and one-of-a-kind experience, Portillo’s will be a welcomed addition to our city’s culinary mix.”

The Springfield location joins the brand’s other central Illinois restaurants in Peoria, Champaign and Normal and is expected to open in the second half of 2021.
