New ownership for Mel-O-Cream Donuts

Mel-O-Cream Donuts, a Springfield staple since 1932, has been sold to a new owner. Springfield resident Amanda Crossland is the principal of Sangamon Donuts, LLC and acquired the four retail locations on July 14.

Crossland, who previously worked for Bunn and H.D. Smith, was the manager for consumer marketing and sales support when she left Bunn in 2018 and founded Marketecture Consulting. She was named one of Springfield Business Journal's Forty Under 40 in 2015.

Crossland said she was doing marketing and business consulting work for Chris Weihmeir, who owned the Mel-O-Cream retail locations under O-Donuts, Inc.

“I started looking at the business and got engrained in it. I saw what a great local business it was, and it’s a strong brand,” Crossland explained.

She worked with Prairie State Bank and Trust to acquire the business and said she also received guidance from David Waltrip and Mel-O-Cream Donuts International, which operates the manufacturing facility located at 5456 International Pkwy.

“The local business community has been super supportive, as has the Mel-O-Cream International team,” Crossland said.

Crossland said she is still finalizing future plans, so for now it will be business as usual at the retail locations. “It’s going to be most of the same staff, just different management,” she said.

The Mel-O-Cream stores are located at 217 E. Laurel St., 525 North Grand Ave E., 195 W. Monroe and 3010 S. Sixth St. in Springfield.
