The new purchasing agent for the City of Springfield is already a familiar name in city government. Amanda Long begins her new job on Aug. 12, which marks her return to the city after nearly two years working as the assistant director at the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Prior to that, she spent 12 years with the Springfield Police Department.
“I wasn’t looking for anything, but the opportunity presented itself,” said Long, explaining that someone from the City of Springfield contacted her after Kassandra Wilkin gave notice that she would be vacating the purchasing agent position. “I was told, ‘We were having a meeting of the minds and your name came up,’” Long said.
“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity that will serve me well long term,” she said, noting that she was looking forward to being in a leadership position.
Long was chosen as one of Springfield Business Journal and Security Bank’s Women of Influence earlier this year and was previously recognized as one of SBJ’s Forty Under 40. She has been active in numerous community organizations including the board of directors of The Parent Place and Springfield Jaycees.
