Don Smith Paint Co. under new ownership

Don Smith Paint Co., located at 1724 S. MacArthur Blvd. in Springfield, is under new ownership as of May 1. Nate Tierney purchased the business from Richard Scott, who had owned it since 1999. Last fall, SBJ broke the news that Stott and his daughter and son-in-law, Zach and Nancy Sweet, had purchased another local retail business, It’s All About Wine.

“It was a perfect fit; I’ve been in the paint industry for years and he was looking to retire,” explained Tierney. “I graduated from Illinois State University in 2007 and started a marketing internship with Sherwin Williams right out of college.”

At one point, Tierney moved to Tallahassee, Florida, to manage a commercial location for Sherwin Williams, but when his wife became pregnant with their second child, the couple decided to move back to Illinois to be closer to family. “We were both born and raised in the Springfield area, so it’s nice to be back home,” Tierney said, noting that his wife grew up just two blocks from the Don Smith paint store.

Other than having new ownership, Tierney said he doesn’t anticipate any major changes for the business. “There won’t be a name change or staffing changes,” he said. “It’s a really well-run company, which is the reason I was attracted to it.”
