Affordable Shred specializes in destroying documents. However, it will soon be able to securely store documents, as well.
Based in Buffalo, Affordable Shred is expanding its services and its footprint by reusing the former Victory Hall Bingo building at 750 N. 19th St. as a secure records storage location. The company, which operates mobile shredding trucks within an 80-mile radius of Springfield, will be renamed Affordable Shred and Storage.
Tom Schreyer, customer service rep with Affordable Shred, says his time in the shredding business has shown him that many companies need a way to securely store records instead of destroying them. Medical records and financial records in particular are governed by federal laws and require special handling, he said, adding that his employees undergo training for compliance with those laws.
"You have to take reasonable security steps in whatever industry you're in," he said. "We want to show a high level of professionalism and dedication to security."
The company's new Springfield location will likely open in mid-June and is currently being renovated, including a new roof and a new storefront.
"It's going to actually have some curb appeal," Schreyer joked.
